Ankle and Foot Conditions #2

Polydactly

Polydactly is one of the oddest congenital deformities. Ironically, after living in the South and now in Minnesota, I still see adults who think it is normal for their children to have six toes.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason why we see patients with polydactly. In reality, tying off a infants toe at birth is no longer advisable. Until the foot is xrayed and bones start to develop, it is difficult to determine what type of deformity they will develop. Besides, the outside toe is not always the normal or even salvageable toe. Ideal time for surgery is between 2-6 years old.

Polydactly can be a very emotionally disturbing deformity for children. Other children will tease and taunt children once in school.

Surgical correction for these deformities can range from simple to complex.

So which toe is the abnormal one?

Infant. Discourage indiscriminate removal of toes. Need to determine what is pathologic and what has normal anatomy.
