Tarsal Coalitions #2

Calcaneonavicular

calcnav1_2.JPG

It is far easier to see a calcaneonavicular coalition, thus why it is appears to be more common.  The lateral view will often show a continuation of the anterior calcaneal beak sloping northward towards the navicular.

CT-SCAN reveals how oblique these coalitions truely are.  In children, when resecting the coalition it is critical to resect following the red lines, but many times surgeons mistakingly resect followng the yellow lines.  As a result, the coalition will re-occur.
