Ankle and Foot Conditions #2

Bone Tumor

Bone Tumors are thankfully almost always benign in the foot and ankle. Malignant tumors do occur but almost always occur in children and/or teenagers. In my practice, I have luckily not seen a malignant bone tumor.

Within my practice the overwhelming majority of the bone tumors will be either be osteochondromas or bone cysts: unicameral and aneurysmal. Enchondromas, fibrous dysplasia, intra-osseous lipomas, osteoid osteomas, and chondroblastomas have been far less common.

Some bone tumors overlap with some soft tissue tumors. Some more common lesions are synovial chondromatosis and pigmented villonodular synovitis.

An excellent resource on the internet is www.bonetumor.org. This site is far more detailed then what is presented here.
